Agree with an earlier review that trekking with Sapa sisters was a truly unforgettable experience. Our guide was 19 year old Mao, who trekked with us with her young adorable 3-mth old son on her back. Apparently she was trekking all the way till she gave birth. Amazing inner strength in her.

Other than the gorgeous views(!! we thank God for bright sunny day on the first day of our trek that gave us marvelous view of the beautiful Sapa terrain), the main draw of the trek was the interaction with Mao, our local guide that offered us a glimpse into to the Hmong people life, in particular the Hmong woman. We definitely left with great respect for them.

There will be older ladies chatting you up and walking along with you when u start the trek. If you don't need any help or aren't keen to buy anything from them, let them know at the onset. For me, the 2 old (50s) ladies were a great help to me in navigating the wet and slippery terrain. I appreciated their warm, friendly presence, even though I knew they would be selling me stuff at the end of the day. Look at it from another angle, you get to see Hmong life through them as well, and I was blessed to have 2 sincerely helpful ladies with me.

Last words - we strongly recommend this tour owned (the business was set up by an european lady and recently passed on to the Hmongs) and led by Hmong women.

1. Sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses: Higher altitudes can produce severe sunburns, even with cloud cover and temperatures in the 50s. Sunscreen, balm, and sunglasses are some of the most important things to pack.
2. Moisturizer: Higher altitudes bring very dry air. Bring along a favorite moisturizer and use it liberally. Protecting your skin will keep you feeling and looking young.

 3. Layers of clothes: Temperatures can drop 40-50 degrees from day to night at higher elevations. Even during the day, weather can change dramatically in a matter of minutes. Bring a sweater, jacket, and clothes made of wicking materials. Be prepared to take layers on and off to stay comfortable and dry.
4. Rain jacket: Afternoon thunderstorms are a daily occurrence in many mountain areas.

5. Water bottle: When you’re active and at altitude, it’s easy to become dehydrated and not know it.  Fill your bottle with water on your way to the hills - in the car, train, bus, or plane - and keep drinking throughout your trip. Plenty of water also helps to prevent headaches often associated with visits to high altitude.
