The 11-day Vietnam mountain biking tour is customized for small group tours, adventure, intrepid travelers seeking an active, adventure cycling holidays to the northern Vietnam. The biking trip begins with an overnight train trip from Hanoi to Laocai where the cycling adventure begins as you cycle from Lao Cai to Bac Ha, then cycle to Sapa, Heaven Gate, Binh Lu, Tam Duong, Phong Tho, Lai Chau, Muong Lay, Dien Bien Phu, Tuan Giao, Son La, Mai Chau. Keep cyling around Mai Chau valley for one more day before you are picked up by your vehicle and transferred back to Hanoi.
The biking tour is provided with visits to ethnic villages, offering the opportunity to meet up with the Flower H’mong, the Giay and the Lu people. You sometimes bike on the back roads, single tracks and off-road biking trails. Option bike ride up to Sin Ho is also available. The mountain cycling tour can be arranged all year round. But the best time to travel this itinerary is April and October.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Overnight train to Lao Cai.

 Day 2: Arrive Lao Cai. Travel to Bac Ha

Arrival in Lao Cai train station around 6 am, after breakfast in Lao Cai & short relax we have a jeep transfer to Bao Nhai to have biking ride 20 km up hill to Bac Ha , after lunch visiting the most colorful hill tribe market which is the most colorful market in North Vietnam. At the market, you have chance to enjoy BacHa people's simple but unique kinds of food with special wines made from rice, cassavas, corn and different sorts of fruits such as plumps, apples, peaches... Leave the market for the H'mong King's house (King Hoang A Tuong) built by the French colonists and the Chinese in 1920.Then short walking to another village (BanPho village).Overnight in Bac Ha.

Day 3: Bac Ha – Sapa

In the morning, transfer to Lao Cai , then chanllenge 35 km climb up to Sapa. Afternoon we start cycling in the surrounding area and visit a number of fairly traditional predominantly Tavan, a village of Giay minority. Overnight in Sapa.

Day 4: Sapa – Heaven gate – Lai Chau.

Say goodbye to Sapa, along the road to Lai Chau, we have best mountain view today, about 3 hours up hill, with a stop over Silver waterfalls for relax and take photos before we conquer the highest mountain pass Oquiho. From there you can see stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the lush forests belonging to Hoang Lien National Park. Continued by car or van uphill to Heaven's Gate,  the highest stretch of road in Vietnam as well as the provincial border of Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces. Here you will have a fantastic opportunity to view the magnificent scenery. Lunch en route. Stop en route to visit some nice villages of Hmong and “coins” Dao near BinhLu.  Overnight in Lai Chau.

Day 5: Lai Chau – Paso – Muong Lay

We cycle down hill to Chan Nua then cycling  to Lai Chau have a couple pretty big climbs and then follow the picturesque Nam Na river into Muang Say (aka "Old Lai Chau").
Some part of the road is bad, but we will have great view along Nam Na river. Scenic Da river from Hang Tom suspension bridge. Overnight in Muong Lay.

Day 6: Muong Lay – Dien Bien Phu
Following breakfast we will have a nice day with stop over the red H’mong village then climb up to Mathiho pass. In the late afternoon we arrive in Dien Bien town and check into our guesthouse for the night. Overnight in Dien Bien Phu.


 Day 7: Dien Bien Phu – Tuan Giao

After breakfast we together ride back to the former French battlefield : A1 hill, De Castries bunker, Dien Bien museum, Muong Thanh airport…you will see some old US weapons here too. After lunch we ride have easy ride through many Thai villages to Tuan Giao . Overnight in Tuan Giao.

Day 8: Tuan Giao – Phadin pass – Son La

Leave Tuan Giao for Son La. Son La is located in a scenic valley, inhabited by Thai, Muong and H'mong minority people. This area is historically important for its involvement in the Vietnamese struggle for independence from France during the first half the 20th century. Challenge 20 km winding climb up hill and 15 km down hill. Nice landscape of green rice fields and karst valley. Light traffic, wandering water buffaloes, Thai and Hmong kids.Overnight in Son La.

Day 9: Son La – Moc Chau – Mai Chau

After breakfast, leaving Son La for Mai Chau. Along the road we can stop the trip in Moc Chau for taking photos and enjoy the fresh air. The road passes beneath spectacular karst cliffs with the valley floor visible far below. Arrive Mai Chau late afternoon. O/N on stilt house of Thai.

Day 10: Cycling Mai Chau

Breakfast at the Thai stilt house then we leave the village for a full day cycling and walking around. We will pass many different Thai hamlets, through rice fields, hill sides…Stop sometimes to visit local houses and talk with local people. And one of the highlights on this walk is to experience the everyday life and culture white Thai people and stay in their traditional house on stilts as honored guests. We will return to the village around late afternoon. Have a short break before enjoying the Thai traditional Music and Dance show which is performed by the village young girls and boys. Although they are not professional artistes, they will give you an unique experience of their culture life. Overnight in stilt house.

Day 11: Mai Chau – Hanoi

After breakfast. We have a cycling trip about 15km out of Mai Chau is up Thung Nhuoi pass, then we go 17km down to Man Duc and two more gentle hill to Doc Cun. (25km). We take a small route to Bai Chao onto Luong Son. Our bus pick up and come back to Hanoi. Trip ends.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Hanoi Overnight train to Laocai.

You will be met up with Lotussia Travel guide at your hotel in Hanoi and transferred to Hanoi train station where you will take a night train for Laocai. Train??? Departure at ??? (To be advised). Overnight on board train.



Day 2: Arrive Laocai. Travel to Sapa. Start cycling Sapa – Lai Chau (L,D).

Arrive Laocai early this morning. You will be greeted by Lotussia local team and transferred uphill to Sapa.

Breakfast will be provided in a local restaurant in town.
After breakfast, you will be transferred by our support vehicle towards Lai Chau province. Enjoy nice mountain view along the way.

We first bike for about 3 hours uphill, with a stop over the Silver waterfalls for relax and take photos before we conquer the highest mountain pass Oquiho. From there you can see stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the lush forests belonging to Hoang Lien National Park.

Continue traveling by car uphill to Heaven's Gate,  the highest stretch of road in Vietnam as well as the provincial border of Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces. Here you will have the opportunity to view the magnificent scenery.

Lunch will be provided en route.

Stop en route to visit some villages of H’mong and Dao near BinhLu before we arrive in Lai Chau where we will spend the night.

Day 3: Continue biking Lai Chau – Muong Lay (B,L,D).

Today we will cycle downhill to Chan Nua and up to Lai Chau.

We will have a couple of pretty big climbs and then follow the picturesque Nam Na river into Muang Say (aka "Old Lai Chau"). Some part of the road is bad, but we will have great view along the Nam Na river.

Lunch will be provided en route.

After lunch, we will have some rest before continue cycling towards Muong Lay. We will pass over the scenic Da river from Hang Tom suspension bridge before arriving in Muong Lay townlet.

Check in to Muong Lay guesthouse for dinner and overnight. 

Day 4: Continue biking Muong Lay – Dien Bien Phu (B,L,D)

Following breakfast we will have a nice day with stop over the red H’mong village then cycle up to Mathiho pass.

Lunch will be provided en route.

In the late afternoon we arrive in Dien Bien town and check into our guesthouse for the night.

Overnight in Dien Bien Phu.


Day 5: Bike Dien Bien Phu – Tuan Giao (B,L,D)
After breakfast we will cycle for the whole morning to visit some war sites such as the A1 hill, De Castries bunker, Dien Bien museum.

Lunch will be provided in a local restaurant in town.

After lunch we will have easy ride through many Thai villages before we arrive in Tuan Giao around late afternoon.

Overnight in Tuan Giao.

Day 6: Cycle Tuan Giao – Son La (B,L,D)

After breakfast, we will leave Tuan Giao, continue our cycling adventure towards Son La province.

Day 7: Bike Son La – Moc Chau – Mai Chau (B,L,D).

After breakfast, leaving Son La for Mai Chau.

Along the road we can stop the trip in Moc Chau for taking photos and enjoy the fresh air. The road passes beneath spectacular karst cliffs with the valley floor visible far below.

Arrive Mai Chau late afternoon. Check into a local stilt houser for dinner and overnight.


Day 8: Mai Chau day walking tour (B,L,D).

We leave the village for a full day walking around.

We will pass many different Thai hamlets, through rice fields, hill sides…Stop sometimes to visit local houses and talk with local people. And one of the highlights on this walk is to experience the everyday life and culture white Thai people and stay in their traditional house on stilts as honored guests.

We will return to the village around late afternoon.

Have a short break before having dinner and assist to the Thai traditional Music and Dance show, is performed by the village young girls and boys. Although they are not professional artistes, they will give you an unique experience of their culture life.

Day 9: Mai Chau – Hanoi (B,L).

After breakfast, we have a cycling trip about 15km out of Mai Chau is up Thung Nhuoi pass, then we go 17km down to Man Duc and two more gentle hill to Doc Cun.

We take a small route to Bai Chao onto Luong Son. Our bus pick us up and travel back to Hanoi.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Sa Pa – Tram Ton – Binh Lu – Tam Duong (L,D)

8:00: You will be met up with your Lotussia Travel guide at your hotel in Sapa. You  first  travel  by  car  uphill  toward Tram Ton. On  the way,  you  can  take  a  short walk  to  Silver Waterfall  and  then  head  to  Heaven  Gate,  where  you  will  be  amazed  by  breathtaking  view  to mountain  surrounding  included  Fansipan,  the  highest  peak  of  Indochina. Your  ride will be mostly downhill  toward Binh  Lu. You will  stop  by Chu Va  village  of Black Hmong  for  a  break  before  you arrive in Binh Lu. Here you will have lunch in a local restaurant.

After  lunch, you start  to  cycle mostly uphill  for  the  rest of  today, which  requires  incredible effort.
You will be able to stop by a village You will then probably need the help of the supply car to go up
another high pass, before enjoying the easy ride downhill all the way to Tam Duong, where you stay
overnight in a hotel.

Day 2: Tam Duong – Border – Paso (B,L,D)

You will start out from Tam Duong by cycling uphill along picturesque tributary of the Na River.  You
will  see  some  places  of  gold  exploration  along  the  river.  You  also  pass  by many  villages of Thai
minority spreading along the way before reaching to Pa So.  You stop for lunch in a local restaurant.

You will  then  continue  the  ride on a  flat  road  toward Sino – Vietnamese border. You will enjoy a
beautiful ride along river. You head back to Paso later to spend the night in a hotel, which locates by
the river. You will be able to enjoy a cold beer on the balcony with beautiful river view.

Day 3: Pa So - Lai Chau (B,L,D)

Today’s ride will be mostly downhill. You will have time to enjoy beautiful scenery as well as stop by
a village of Thai minority, the largest group ethnic in this area. You still follow the road, which goes
along the Na River until you arrive in Lai Chau in the early afternoon. You check in a hotel and have
a late lunch.

After having a rest, you will be transferred to the river, where you take a boat ride downstream in
the Black River. You can make a stop to visit a village of Thai minority and hear about their daily life
on the riverbank. A friendly atmosphere makes your trip more enjoyable. The boat takes you further
downstream. You will be transferred back to the hotel in the late afternoon.

Day 4: Lai Chau - Dien Bien Phu (B,L,D)

Today  will  be  a  longest  ride.  You  will  start  out  on  a  good  road,  which  makes  your  ride  very
comfortable. You arrive in Muong Lay by noon. Here you will be able to take a walk around a local
market. You will have either lunch in a local restaurant or picnic lunch prepared by the hotel.

After lunch, you head toward Dien Bien Phu. You will continue on the good road and the ride is even
more enjoyable in a beautiful nature. The ride will be downhill and then flat upon your arrival in Dien
Bien Phu. Mountains and huge  rice  fields  surround  the busy  town. Here you  spend  the night  in a
hotel. You will be able to take a walk to a nearby market to spread your legs.

Day 5: Dien Bien Phu - City tour (B,L)

After  having  breakfast,  you will  have  an  interesting  bicycle  trip  around  the  town  to  visit  famous
historical sites such as Dien Bien Phu Museum, Glory Statue, A1 Hill and De Cattery Tunnel. You will
be back to the hotel for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will be transferred to the airport for a flight to Ha Noi. End of Lotussia Travel service.
